Tenaha ISD and the Shelby County VFW Post join forces to support and assist local Veterans who may be in need within our community.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is a nonprofit veterans service organization comprised of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces. At it's core, the VFW strives to:
*Always put the interests of members first
*Treat donors as partners in their cause
*Promote patriotism
*Honor military service
*Ensure the care of veterans and their families
*Serve our communities
*Promote a positive image of the VFW
*Respect the diversity of veteran opinions
Research has shown that our Veterans struggle with a host of issues once returning home, and the VFW and Tenaha ISD would like to help those in need locate the appropriate services. The VFW membership is FREE to Veterans for the first year and $35 following; however, financial strain should not be a reason for any Veteran to do without services. The Shelby County VFW and it's current members are willing to assist in any way necessary to locate these Veterans and give them the support they so greatly deserve.
Statistics have shown, according to the National Veteran Suicide Annual Prevention Report, that nearly 17.5 Veterans succumb to suicide daily. In addition to medical services, mental health is also an issue that severely plaques our Veteran population with 1 in every 4 veterans suffering from some type of mental illness. The VFW post has relationships with providers who specialize in all of these services and can help support our Veterans in need.
If you are a local veteran and would like more information on the VFW, the membership available or just need someone to speak with, please complete the form at the link below. Someone with the local VFW will contact you to help best serve your needs. Our VFW members want to inform you of your rights as a Veteran and continue to grow this fantastic organization for those in the future.
Thank you for your time, bravery, and service, Veterans; we may not KNOW them ALL, but we OWE them ALL.

Coming off a Silver Bracket Championship at the Battle of the Bay in Corpus Christie this past week, the Lady Tigers vault to #1 in the Class 2A State Rankings at 13-3 on the season. This is directly related to the fact that this team has played 5 and 6A teams since the beginning of the season, and continues to excel and push their own limits to be the best team possible. There is no doubt, the Lady Tigers have the toughest schedule in 2A girls basketball this year, and they are learning and growing with each game.
Congratulations ladies and coaches! Keep working hard and pushing; we are so proud and know there are great things to come!

Yesterday, Mrs. Dunn's students went "speed dating" to find their new book interests!!
The students participated in a book speed dating. We were transformed to a high end Café De Dunn where the students searched for their "book mate". The students had three rounds where they met new book interests. They then chose their true love book that they wanted to spend time with and get to know better. This activity allowed students to investigate different books that they might not have chosen on their own.
Thank you for making learning and reading FUN Mrs. Dunn!!!
ATTENTION TIGERNATION! Until further notice, the Elementary School doors will be locked from 8:15am until 3:00pm each day.
During these times, visitors will need to check in through the high school office.
This includes signing elementary students out for appointments. Thank you for your cooperation.
Ward Passes Torch to Byrdsong
With the conclusion of the 2023 Tenaha Tiger football season, 2024 will usher more changes than just a new year. Tenaha ISD was made aware of Coach Ward’s wishes to move into Administration this past summer and began making plans for this transition. Coach Byrdsong will continue to lead the High School as Principal without interruption for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year. Coach Ward will move into Administrative responsibilities as assigned now that football season has concluded. Mr. Ward and Mr. Byrdsong will meet with all athletes at 12:30 today to discuss the transition.
Mr. Byrdsong is very excited about the opportunity to extend his relationship with the students into this new role. “I have learned a lot from Coach Ward this past season. I look forward to continuing the Tiger Tradition that Coach Ward has done such an outstanding job of cultivating here in Tenaha over the years.” Coach Byrdsong has most recently seen success as the co-defensive coordinator at John Tyler High School for 2 years with 4th round playoff finishes, as well as the Defensive Coordinator at Liberty Eylau where they also saw 3rd and 4th round playoff finishes as well. “I hope to continue to build on the foundation of a program that expects young men to demonstrate discipline, character and a program that the community can be proud of grades 7-12.”
Coach Terry Ward, puts down his headset and clipboard after a very successful 27 year coaching career; one that has multiple playoff appearances, countless wins, and the ultimate achievement…a State Championship.
“After 27 years of coaching and being on the sidelines, I have made the decision to move into a different direction both professionally and personally. I will always cherish my time coaching: the memories made with the athletes and their families who have entrusted me with the role of raising wonderful young men, along with sharing this responsibility with my amazing coaching staffs from all across the state and getting to know their families as well. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for trusting me.
I have been blessed with opportunities that a lot of people have not; including winning the State Championship in 2011.
I am now looking forward to devoting my time to my family: my wife, Elizabeth, who has stood beside me throughout my entire coaching career. We plan to spend our time cheering on our sons, who are now making their mark in the coaching world themselves.
Thank you to everyone who has stood behind our team, our family and me throughout my time as the head coach and athletic director here in Tenaha; your support will never be forgotten.”
Tenaha ISD would like to sincerely thank Coach Ward and his family for their dedication to Tenaha ISD and their athletes in this role and “season of life”; you have all truly left a positive impact on our school and community and we are thankful that you will continue to do so in other roles as well.
